چکیده

In this paper we develop an analytical threshold-based bandwidth allocation policy for 3G multi-class cellular networks. We consider the effects of user mobility when the cellular network supports multiple classes of connections having different QoS bandwidth requirements. The policy gives priority to handoff connections over new calls and prioritizes between different classes of handoff connections according to their QoS constraints by assigning a maximum occupancy, i.e. a threshold, to each connection class. The policy can be modeled as a multidimension Markov chain, and therefore, a product form solution is provided. The QoS metrics – new call blocking probability, handoff call dropping probability, and probability of unsuccessful call completion are derived. We show numerically that this policy improves the service quality by minimizing handoff dropping probability and maximizing the bandwidth utilization i.e. by minimizing the new call blocking probability.

The Role of Regulatory in Price Control and Spectrum Allocation to Competing Wireless Access Networks

With the rapid growth of wireless access networks, various providers offer their services using different technologies such as Wi-Fi, Wimax, 3G, 4G and so on. These networks compete for the scarce wireless spectrum. The spectrum is considered to be a scarce resource moderated by the spectrum allocation regulatory (“regulatory” for short) which is the governance body aiming to maximize the socia...

Asymptotic Close to Optimal Resource Allocation in Centralized Multi-band Wireless Networks

This paper concerns sub-channel allocation in multi-user wireless networks with a view to increasing the network throughput. It is assumed there are some sub-channels to be equally divided among active links, such that the total sum rate increases, where it is assumed each link is subject to a maximum transmit power constraint. This problem is found to be a non-convex optimization problem and i...

Investigation of Bandwidth Allocation Based on Rat Selection in a Wireless Heterogeneous Network for Smart Home Application

Smart homes have gained a lot of attention in recent years. People are looking forward to receiving an opportunistic network, where they can gather communication devices within a wireless heterogeneous network. The most important issue in a wireless heterogeneous network is to manage bandwidth, due to the scarcity of this resource in wireless links, compared to wired networks. Bandwidth managem...

Utility-based Adaptive Bandwidth Allocation for Multi-Class Traffic in Wireless Networks

Adaptive bandwidth allocation is becoming more attractive in wireless communications since it can dynamically upgrade or degrade the allocated bandwidth of ongoing calls to cope with the network resource fluctuation. In this paper, we propose a utility-based adaptive bandwidth allocation scheme for multi-class traffic in wireless networks. Our scheme allocates bandwidth to ongoing calls accordi...

A Novel Multicast Tree Construction Algorithm for Multi-Radio Multi-Channel Wireless Mesh Networks

Many appealing multicast services such as on-demand TV, teleconference, online games and etc. can benefit from high available bandwidth in multi-radio multi-channel wireless mesh networks. When multiple simultaneous transmissions use a similar channel to transmit data packets, network performance degrades to a large extant. Designing a good multicast tree to route data packets could enhance the...
